JIMMIE J. CATHEY earned the Ph.D. from Texas A&M University and has 13 years of industrial experience in the design and development of electric device systems. Since 1980, he has taught at the University of Kentucky. His research and teaching interests are power electronics, electric machines, and robotics. He is a Registered Professional Engineer.
WILLIAM T. SMITH is Associate Professor in the department of electrical engineering at the University of Kentucky, where he has taught since 1990 and has twice won the Outstanding Engineering Professor Award. He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Kentucky and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was an academic visitor at the IBM Austin Research Laboratory and previously worked as a senior engineer in the Government Aerospace Systems Division of Harris Corporation. He is also the co-author of several journal articles and conference papers and served as abridgment editor of Schaum's Easy Outline: Basic Electricity, Schaum's Easy Outline: Electromagnetics, and Schaum's Easy Outline: Electric Circuits.
